About Me and Southeast Raleigh Magnet High School
Thanks for visiting my website! In my 16 year teaching career, 15 years of which have been at Southeast Raleigh Magnet High School, I have taught Psychology/Sociology, Economics and Personal Finance (EPF), Civic Literacy, IB History of the Americas, American History 1 & 2, Law and Justice, AP US History and AP Government and Politics.
I have a Sociology degree from the University of Texas at Austin and hold a Social Studies teaching certification from the University of Texas at Dallas. Before moving to North Carolina in 2009 from Texas, I was a Microsoft Windows System Administrator and Desktop support trainer in the financial and banking sectors. While I enjoyed my challenging career in the technology industry, my long-term goal was always to teach at the high school level. United States History, our government and traveling are some of my greatest passions, so teaching Social Studies was an easy choice. After more than a decade in the tech industry, I opted to leave my career at the bank and embrace new opportunities in public education. My career as an educator has been more challenging and rewarding than I could have imagined. Giving students opportunities to see how government and history shapes (and sometimes repeats) in the present has been the best part of my job And showing students how to be active and productive citizens in their communities and governments year after year is especially fulfilling. The state's newest offering, with includes a personal finance course, has been super rewarding, getting to teach students all sort of useful skills, or as my students like to refer to the class.... #adulting class.
I continue to have the highest expectations for my students...and getting kids to learn that skill building in the areas of focus, intrinsic motivation, and the ability to delay gratification are their keys to success in school and in life. They have the power, and getting them to see, believe and understand this fact is the way to true lifelong success and learning in their lives. I invite all parents/guardians and their teens to read more about what educators will be expecting from families. Information on each course I teach is found on the navigation bars at the top of this page (Class Pages). Student's daily work will be found in the student's individual Canvas courses, grades always available online on Powerschool, all of which can be available to parents and guardians 24/7.
